Design is {open to all opinions}

Hello and welcome to all designers!

Please FOLLOW this blog (on the right column, click "FOLLOW") and post a COMMENT as a reply!

This is an open blog for all designers to write about design. We are trying to send out a positive message about design. Our goal is to spread awareness about what design is and what designers do on the UC Davis campus, as well as around the world!

We feel that most people that aren't designers are confused as to what a designer is and how much time goes into executing a design or even an idea! There are visual communicators, fashion designers, textile designers, interior architecture designers, exhibition designers and more!

Please contribute to this blog and let us know what you think design is! How did you decide you wanted to be a designer? How did you get into the field of design? How much time and energy do you usually put into your designs? (Think brainstorming, sketching, determining colors, etc.) Post what you have on your mind about design! Also feel free to post some of your design work, or work of other designers you know!

Every week we will post a different design that has been contributed through comments. So please post what you'd like people to see. Keep it clean and positive!

Thank you and we look forward to hearing your voice!

Melanie, Stacy and Claire.

  3. Just for reference, that is if you didnt know already. 4th year graphic design major.

    My opinion of what design is a implementation of purpose through form.

    What I mean is that, unlike art, which tends to be a expression of feeling, our work has a more direct purpose, and that purpose achieved through how we accomplish our designs.

    I entered design in the summer quarter of my sophomore year after bouncing around the Computer Science (CS) major, so I've been a part of this major for a little under two years.

    I chose this major because after deciding to leave the CS major, I thought it coincided best with my interests. I had some technical background with the programs we use, photoshop, indesign and dreamweaver. Also I was interested in art and illustration but my decided lack of skill and desire for more structure led me to design over art.

    However when I joined the major, I really had very little idea of what design was. Design 14, and 15 which were the first classes I took were very similar to normal art classes, and Design 1 did very little to clear that up for me.

    It was not really till I reached design 115 and especially 116 till it started to make more sense, the concept of design.

    I can't say that my current method for developing concepts is very solid, I'm still working reaching a different level of concept that is deeper than what I currently capable of. Currently it consists of sketching, jotting down notes of random ideas, maybe looking here and there for inspiration. I envision colors roughly in my head when planning and get more specific when it goes digital.

    However, I think as a designer, coming up with a concept is the most important part. Often, after coming up with a strong concept, the rest just falls in place. Its coming up with the right concept that is the challenging yet most important part of design.
